Game 1 Box Score (George Washington 7, Cornell 6)
Game 2 Box Score (Cornell 1, George Washington 1)
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Cornell nearly came all the way back in a one-run loss in game one against George Washington on Tuesday evening, then literally ran out of time after rallying for a game two tie. Cornell fell to 5-7-1 after falling in game one, 7-6, before scoring once in the top of the seventh inning to salvage a 1-1 tie in the nightcap that was ended due to darkness.
A run-scoring double by Erin Keene plated Kristen Towne in the seventh inning of game two to make sure senior Elizabeth Dalrymple didn't take yet another hard-luck loss. Cornell's all-time strikeout leader scattered six hits and struck out six in her sixth complete game in as many starts on the year. The Big Red could muster just four hits in the contest, but the biggest were consecutive doubles by Towne and Keene in the seventh to score the tying run. GW threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting runners on first and third with one out, but Dalrymple got out of the jam. Due to darknes, the game was then halted prior to the start of extra innings and the Big Red ended the contest with its first tie since a 6-6, eight-inning tie against Quinnipiac during the 2005 campaign.
In game one, Christina Villalon was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Marissa Amiraian scored twice and went 1-for-3. Erin Belles was 2-for-4 and Katie Watts was 1-for-2 for three RBI. The Big Red's fielding did it in again, as Cornell allowed four unearned runs due to three errors. Ali Tomlinson took the loss despite striking out a season-high seven hitters in 5.1 innings of work. George Washington's Chelsea Lenhart led the home team with a 3-for-4 day with three RBI and two runs scored, while Heidi Penna earned the complete game win, scattering seven hits and surrendering just two earned runs herself.
The Big Red plated a run in the top of the first with Amiraian leading off with a walk, Bucolo reaching on an error and Villalon driving a single down the leftfield line to score the first run. Belles singled to load the bases with one out, and Watts took advantage with her first career triple to sore all three runners, giving the Big Red a 4-0 edge.
The Colonials got all four runs back in the third with an RBI double by Lenhart, a sacrfice fly and consecutive infield errors by the Big Red to knot the game at 4-4. THe home team then took a 6-4 lead on a two-run double by Lenhart with one out in the sixth. Terrazas added an RBI single to make it 7-4 heading into the final frame.
The Big Red mounted a comeback, starting with an Amiraian infield single. Edwards then singled, followed by Bucolo being hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Villalon drove a pitch to left-centerfield, scoring two to make it 7-6 and putting runners on first and second with no outs. After a pair of groundouts, Katie Watts lined out to second base to end the game.
