THE MATCHUP – No. 40 Cornell (25-4, 6-0) will close out the regular season on the road against Columbia (8-14, 2-4) on Saturday April 23 at 2:00pm at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. After clinching at least a share of the Ivy title last weekend, the Big Red men's tennis team will look to go undefeated in Ivy play for the first time in Cornell history and become the outright league champion for the 2011 season.
THE SERIES VS. COLUMBIA – Cornell and Columbia competed for the first time in 1906. The Lions lead the series, 50-36-1, and have won the past six Ivy League meetings.
SCOUTING THE LIONS – Columbia currently holds a 2-4 record in the Ivy League heading into the final weekend of Ancient Eight competition. Last weekend, the Lions fell to Princeton, 5-2, before beating Penn, 5-2. Against the Tigers, the Lions took the doubles point, but only one singles win at the No. 5 spot. Versus the Quakers, the Lions swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead and followed through with four singles wins at the No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
THE SCENARIO – Last weekend, the Big Red clinched a share of its first ever Ivy title. With a win this weekend, Cornell can take the title outright and be the first Big Red men's tennis squad to go undefeated in the Ivy League. A win would also give the seniors their first career win against the Lions.
LAST TIME VS. THE LIONS – Earlier this season, the Big Red defeated Columbia in the opening round of the ECAC Indoor Tournament, earning the doubles point and then picking up five straight-set singles victories to dispatch the Lions, 6-1. The last time the squads met in Ivy League competition, the Big Red fell to Columbia, 6-1, on March 6, 2010 in Ithaca, N.Y.
LAST TIME OUT FOR CORNELL – Last weekend, the Big Red clinched a share of its first ever Ivy League title with a 4-3 win against Princeton on Sunday. In a battle of Ivy unbeatens, Cornell grabbed the doubles point with a pair of 9-8 wins by No. 1
