ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red men's tennis team remained undefeated in Ivy League action with a 4-3 win over Brown this afternoon at the Reis Tennis Center. With the win, Cornell improves to 20-4 overall (3-0) and extended its home-match winning streak to 16 straight victories. The Bears fell to 13-6 on the season (0-3 Ivy).
Cornell swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take the early 1-0 lead.
A victory by
Jonathan Jaklitsch at the No. 2 singles spot, followed by a pair of Brown wins notched the match at 2-2, leaving three three-set thrillers to decide the winner.
At the No. 1 spot,
Andy Gauthier earned a hard-fought victory (4-6, 6-0, 6-4), but
Mirza Klis fell at No. 3 (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) to deadlock the match again at 3-3.
The No. 6 match proved to be the decider, as
Zhongming Chen fought back from a first set loss to seal the victory for the Big Red with a third-set tie-breaker (4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1)).
The Big Red is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 10, as it plays host to Yale at the Reis Tennis Center at 2:00 p.m.
