The Cornell men's soccer team will go for its first win Tuesday night when it takes on Lafayette College. The Big Red and the Leopards will square off at 7 p.m.
HEAD COACH JARO ZAWISLAN: The 2011 season is
Jaro Zawislan's third at the helm of the Big Red. He racked up a 10-14-10 record in his first two seasons, improving a team that finished 1-15 in 2008 to 6-6-5 in 2009. He earned his first Cornell victory on Sept. 7, 2009 against Hartwick and his 10th on Oct. 12 at Colgate. Zawislan, a native of Poland, played soccer for four years at Clemson and then spent time professionally in the United States and Poland. His first college coaching job was at Creighton in 1999.
ABOUT THE BIG RED: Cornell comes into Tuesday's game with a 0-1 record after finishing last season with a 4-8-5 mark and an eighth-place standing in the Ivy League. The Big Red returns its top leading scorers from last year, senior
Chase Aaronson (3) and junior
Franck Onambele (3), along with four of its other six goal scorers from 2010.
Daniel Haber, who led the team in shots as a freshman, is back for his sophomore season. Starting goalkeeper
Rick Pflasterer, a junior, also returns to mind the net.
ABOUT LAFAYETTE: The Leopards, based in Easton, Pa., enter Tuesday's contest with a 1-1 mark after defeating Rider at home in their season opener on Wednesday and falling to Temple on the road Saturday. Head coach Dennis Bohn, a 1998 graduate of Columbia, is in his 11th year with Lafayette and holds a 100-55-32 record with the team. The Leopards, who have had 10 consecutive winning seasons, compete out of the Patriot League.
THE SERIES WITH LAFAYETTE: In the seven previous contests between these teams, Lafayette holds a 4-2-1 advantage. Most recently, the Big Red fell 1-0 in overtime at Lafayette on Oct. 19 of last season.
FIRST GAME RECAP: The Big Red got off to an aggressive start in its home opener Friday, outshooting Niagara College 18-7. The Purple Eagles, however, took advantage of their few opportunities early and went ahead 2-0 midway through the first half. Sophomore
Patrick Slogic scored his first career goal to bring Cornell within one, but Niagara pulled away in the second half. Cornell is now 33-25-8 in season openers since 1946.
BRING IN THE YOUNG GUNS: The 2011 Cornell squad features 10 new players, including nine freshmen and one transfer. All together, the 10 newcomers make up more than one third of the 29-player roster.
Justin Orden, who spent his freshman year at Wake Forest, is the lone transfer. Of the 10, two started and two others saw time against Niagara in the season-opener Friday.
MINDING THE NET:
Rick Pflasterer had a terrific 2010 season, and he hopes for another strong campaign this year. The junior goalkeeper's 0.86 GAA was the sixth-best in Cornell history, ranked third in the Ivy League and 37th in the nation. His save percentage of .778 was also good enough for third among the Ancient Eight, and the team's 0.94 goals allowed per game was second in the Ivy League.
UP NEXT: Cornell plays next in a two-game tournament on Friday and Sept. 11 against Robert Morris and Hartwick for the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta. After that, the Big Red play host to Long Island University and Hofstra in a two-game home tournament on Sept. 16 and 18.
