HAMILTON, N.Y. -- A strong combined team effort helped propel the Big Red swimming and diving teams past Colgate on Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y. The women beat the defending Patriot League champions 175 to 125, while the men also beat the Raiders, 197.5 to 99.5.

The afternoon started off well with both teams going 1-2 in the 200 medley relays and winning both 1000 freestyle events. Despite charges from Colgate during the front half of the meet, the Red never gave in and led from start to finish.

The freshmen and sophomore classes contributed many key finishes during the day and that speak well for the teams' depth all around. Freshman Meredith Drummond capped off a long day of swimming with a convincing victory in the 400 IM and narrowly missed the pool record in that event by less than a tenth of a second.

It was a great day on the boards as well. Senior Mary Kate Lynch and junior James O'Neil earned their first collegiate victories in the 1-meter events.

This win comes off a hard week of training for the Big Red, who will head back to Ithaca and get ready to travel to Columbia next weekend. The women's meet is at 11:00 a.m. and the men will take off at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.
