ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The sixth-ranked men's squash team fell behind early and couldn't recover Wednesday night, suffering a 7-2 loss to fourth-ranked University of Rochester at Lyman Racquet Center to snap the Big Red's three-match winning streak.
The Yellowjackets won five straight matches to clinch the match before the Big Red secured a point. Junior
Arjun Gupta then got Cornell (8-3) on the board with a straight-set victory over Matt Domenick at the No. 5 spot.
Junior
Owen Butler then provided the Big Red's other victory at No. 7, winning his fifth consecutive match and improving to 10-1 on the season. Rochester's Karm Kumar was the first competitor to take Butler to five sets this season, but Butler never trailed and eventually closed out the match 11-6, 7-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6.
While the Big Red leads the all-time series with Rochester, 55-15, Wednesday's match was the Yellowjackets' fifth straight victory in the last three seasons. Rochester (6-2) has defeated Cornell in the Potter Cup quarterfinals in 2010 and 2011 by matching 7-2 scores.
In the decisive No. 4 match, freshman
Aditya Jagtap fought back from a two-set deficit against Adam Perkiomaki. Jagtap took a lead in the fifth game before Perkiomaki rallied to tie at 10 and eventually emerged with the 15-13 win.
The Big Red is idle this weekend before returning to action with a three-match weekend Feb. 3-5 at Belkin International Squash Courts in Ithaca. Ninth-ranked Franklin & Marshall visits on Friday, Feb. 3, then Ivy League play resumes with noon matches Saturday, Feb. 4 against #7 Dartmouth and Sunday, Feb. 5 against Harvard.
