PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cornell's 12-game winning streak and undefeated record vanished on Saturday afternoon as Brown, in front of a packed Stevenson Field crowd, defeated Cornell 2-0 to hand the Big Red its first loss of the year.

No. 18 Brown (11-1-2, 3-0-1 Ivy League) also dealt a huge blow to the Big Red's Ivy League title hopes as the Bears took the top spot in the conference away from No. 10 Cornell (12-1, 3-1 Ivy League) with their victory and now control their own destiny in the standings.

Ben Maurey had the game-winning goal in the fifth minute for the defending Ivy League co-champions, and despite 85 minutes to stage a comeback, the Big Red was unable to get a goal for the first time since the 2010 season finale.

Cornell had its best chance of the game in the first minute of the second half. Peter Chodas settled the ball and found Haber at the top of the penalty box. Kernan-Schloss made a diving save on a hard shot from Haber, but the rebound bounced out to the six-yard box. Tyler Regan sprinted into the area to try and make a play on it, but pressure from behind made his rebound attempt soft and directly at Kernan-Schloss for a second save.

The Bears – who have been to the NCAA Tournament six of the last seven years and made the Sweet 16 each of the last two – put Cornell in a hole very early as Bobby Belair took a shot on a nice cross from the left by Dylan Remick. The shot was saved by Pflasterer, but a juicy rebound went straight to Ben Maurey. The sophomore forward didn't miss with a gaping net in front of him, and it was 1-0 Brown just 4:25 in.

The rest of the first half was very tense as both teams went through periods of controlling the ball and both sides had their chances. Daniel Haber had three shots in the half, but Brown keeper Sam Kernan-Schloss only had to make one save. The Big Red had five corner kicks to the Bears' three and had plenty of free kick opportunities on Brown's seven fouls, but none of the set pieces resulted in a score.

The Bears sealed the victory thanks to a goal with 19:30 left on the clock. A long shot attempt by Alex Markes went into the six-yard box, and Pflasterer dove to punch the ball away. The senior made the save, but his punch went directly into Peter Chodas' body and back into the net, counting as an unfortunate own goal for the Big Red.

Matt Mardesich had an excellent header attempt just a few seconds after the goal to try to bring Cornell within one, but Kernan-Schloss tipped the header over the net and forced a corner kick where the Big Red did not convert.

Pflasterer did have four saves in the game to reach 150 for his career, but he was unable to earn the victory.

Cornell will look to get back in the win column when it takes on Princeton at home on Saturday at 3 p.m.
