ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell got a goal from
Jenna Cantor, but it came far too late as visiting Princeton scored three first-half goals en route to a 5-1 victory at Berman Field on Saturday night.
Cantor's goal came late in the game as the Big Red had a corner kick opportunity with 19 minutes showing on the clock. The corner went far post and bounced off multiple bodies in the box. Princeton's goalie got a hand on it, but the loose ball went to Cantor, who didn't miss from close distance and ended the Tigers' run at a shutout.
Cornell (1-13-1, 0-5-1 Ivy League) played a solid first 10 minutes, holding the Tigers without a shot on goal. But after that, Princeton (11-3-1, 6-0) showed why it is the top team in the conference by scoring three goals in 18 minutes.
The Tigers' first goal came on a corner kick taken by Rachel Sheehy. The senior's kick went far post, and Lynessa McGee was there for the header goal in the 13th minute.
Princeton's second strike came 16 minutes later on some nice passing up the middle. Lauren Lazo fed a through ball to Jen Hoy, who found Jessica Haley all alone in the center of the penalty box.
Two minutes later, Lazo got a goal of her own when she took a pass from Guzman in the left side of the box. Lazo cut back inside and chipped the ball over Cornell goalie
Tori Christ.
The Big Red's first-half highlight came from Christ, though, as she made a leaping save on a shot by Emily Sura. Sura had a great opening, but Christ jumped high to snag the ball out of midair and keep the score at 3-0 at halftime.
Princeton got a fourth goal seven minutes into the second half when Lazo cut into the penalty area, beat a defender and chipped the ball far post past Christ. Princeton's final score was a perfect free kick by Haley from outside the right side of the penalty area. The kick went to the far side and just stayed inside the post.
Cornell concludes its season next weekend when it hosts Dartmouth. The game will kick off at 3 p.m. from Berman Field.
