Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to Penn

Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Big Red volleyball team dropped a 3-0 heartbreaker to Penn this evening, falling 25-21, 27-25, 25-23, at the Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa. The match featured 25 ties and 10 lead changes through three sets, but Cornell came up just short, falling to 4-10 on the season (1-3 Ivy). With the victory, the Quakers improve to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

In her first action since early in the 2010 season, senior setter Lucy Zheng finished the night with a 31-assist, 16-dig double-double. She also tallied three kills, three block assists and one service ace. Zheng's favorite targets on the evening were Breanna Wong and Kelly Marble, who finished with nine kills apiece. Wong also led the team with a .269 hitting percentage with just two errors on 26 attempts.

Defensively, Sierra Young registered a team-high 20 digs for the Big Red, while Rachel D'Epagnier finished with six blocks (two solo, four assisted).

Penn was led by Emma White's 12 kills, while Susan Stuecheli and Kristen Etterbeck finished with nine kills apiece. The trio combined for 30 kills and just seven total errors, helping the Quakers finish with a .149 hitting percentage for the match.

Setter Ronnie Bither posted 27 assists and libero Dani Shepard was outstanding with a match-high 25 digs.

Cornell is back in action tomorrow night, Saturday, Oct. 6, when it takes on Princeton in Jadwin Gym at 5 p.m.
