PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Brown closed the game on a 20-9 run over the final 4:17 to get past Cornell 60-49 on Saturday evening in women's basketball action at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears improved to 14-8 (5-3 Ivy), while Cornell dropped its record to 9-12 (3-4 Ivy).

Taylor Flynn scored 16 points, Allyson DiMagno had 12 points and 11 rebounds (including six offensive boards) and Clare Fitzpatrick netted 12 points with three steals, but the rest of the lineup could muster just nine points in the loss. Cornell shot under 30 percent from the floor (.296), but the team did hit on 11-of-12 from the charity stripe, good for 92 percent.

After shooting just 24 percent in the first half and missing all seven 3-point attempts, Brown made 65 percent of its shots in the second half and nailed 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Bears also were perfect on 13 free throw attempts. Four players reached double figures, with Sheila Dixon (16 points, six rebounds) leading the way. Hannah Passafuime chipped in 11 points and both Lauren Clarke and Lindsay Nickel tallied 10 points and five rebounds.

Flynn, making her first start of the season, scored the Big Red's first eight points to lift the visitors to an early 8-2 lead. Cornell controlled the pace with its defense in the first 20 minutes, going up by as many as eight (18-10) with a little more than five minutes left on the clock after Flynn drained another 3-pointer. It would be Cornell 20-14 at halftime behind Flynn's 11 points and just three team turnovers.

Brown got right back, scoring seven straight points to open the second half to regain the lead at 21-20. Consecutive 3-pointers by Flynn and DiMagno gave the Big Red the lead right back at 26-21, but just two minutes later the game was again all tied, this time at 28-28. The game continued to go back and forth, with Brown taking a 37-32 edge after a 3-pointer by Sophie Bikofsky. DiMagno answered right back with a jumper, followed by four straight points by Fitzpatrick as the road team recaptured the lead. With the lead trading hands, Cornell tied it for the final time at 40-40 with 4:30 left after a jumper by Flynn.

From there, it was all Brown. Clarke nailed a 3-pointers and Passafuime hit two free throws to go up 45-40. It wouldn't trail again. Free throws late would push the Bears to a double digit lead, and a basket in the final seconds by Passafuime wrapped up the scoring and gave Brown the hard-fought victory.

Cornell returns home to face Penn on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena.
