PRINCETON, N.J. – The men's squash team finished fourth at the College Squash Association's National Championships over the weekend, marking the highest finish in program history.
Sixth-seeded Cornell (13-7) feel to Harvard in Sunday's third-place match, 5-4 – an identical result to the teams' regular-season meeting on Feb. 5 at Cornell's Belkin International Squash Courts. On Sunday at Princeton's Jadwin Squash Courts, fourth-seeded Harvard once again rallied from an early deficit to top the Big Red. Victories from
Thomas Spettigue (No. 3) and
Arjun Gupta (No. 6) gave Cornell a 2-1 lead after the first rotation, but the match was tied at 3 going into the final trio of matches.
Owen Butler won at No. 7 to give the Big Red its fourth point, but Harvard won matches at the Nos. 1 and 4 spots to surge ahead for good.
The weekend started with a bang for Cornell, which upset third-seeded Yale, 8-1, in Friday's quarterfinal opener. It was just the Big Red's third victory in 53 all-time meetings with Yale, avenging a 5-4 loss to the Bulldogs on Jan. 14.
The Big Red swept the first wave after wins from
Rishi Jalan (No. 9) and Gupta (No. 6), followed by a dramatic victory from Spettigue (No. 3) – a match in which Spettigue rallied from two games down against the Bulldogs' Richard Dodd. It pushed Jalan to 12-0 on the season.
Freshman
Ryan Todd gave the Big Red a 4-0 lead with a five-game victory at No. 8, then Alex Domenick clinched the victory with a three-game sweep at No. 2.
On Saturday, Cornell fell to Princeton, 7-2, in the semifinals. Spettigue (No. 3) and
Aditya Jagtap (No. 4) provided the Big Red's victories. Princeton went on to win the national championship Sunday, beating 13-time defending champion and top seed Trinity, 5-4.
While team competition has concluded for the Big Red, the CSA's Individual Championships will be held March 2-4. Junior
Nick Sachvie finished second in last year's event.
