ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the second straight day, the women's hockey team took a three-goal lead on Brown at Lynah Rink -- except on Saturday, the Big Red poured it on.
Junior defenseman
Laura Fortino scored twice, and
Lauriane Rougeau,
Erin Barley-Maloney and
Chelsea Karpenko had a goal and an assist apiece in a 6-0 whitewashing in the second game of an ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series. Coupled with a 4-2 victory Friday, the top-seeded and third-ranked Big Red (28-3) will advance to a semifinal at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 2 against an opponent to be determined at Lynah Rink.
Karpenko got the Big Red on the board just 37 seconds into the game with her 17th goal of the season after
Catherine White and Barley-Maloney worked the puck along the end boards before a goal-mouth feed.
Fortino's first goal came on the power play at the 6:06 mark, with her second 4:26 later to extend the hosts' lead to three goals. Freshman
Jillian Saulnier scored the Big Red's second power-play goal of the game 7:54 into the second period, chasing Brown starting goalie Katie Jamieson.
Rougeau's sixth goal of the year sailed through traffic and into the upper corner at the near post less than two minutes later to continue the onslaught. Barley-Maloney then capped the scoring with 2:02 remaining in the second period on a wrap-around after she collected a rebound from a Karpenko shot that went wide.
Senior goalie
Amanda Mazzotta made 13 saves for her fifth shutout of the season. Her best save came on a three-on-two break 5:44 into the third period that resulted in Skyelar Siwak skating toward goal from the right circle. But Mazzotta cut down the angle and smothered the shot.
The Big Red will play in the first of Friday's semifinals at Lynah Rink. The second is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The championship will be played at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at Lynah Rink.
