ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's swimming and diving team finished the 2012 Ivy League championships in eighth place with 575.5 team points after setting a school record and posting numerous season and career-best times in Saturday afternoon at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
Taylor Wilson placed 13th in the marathon 1650 free, touching the wall in 15:45.58, more than 28 seconds better than his seed time.
Michael Reynolds wasn't far behind in 17th in a time of 15:51.41. That was 43 seconds better than his previous career best and the seventh-fastest time in Cornell history.
Ben Itzkowitz was even faster compared to his previous career-best, as his 16:00.29 was 47 seconds faster than his seed time, good for 17th overall. His swim bettered a career-best and lowered his ninth-place time at Cornell.
Ben Catanese swam a 1:49.36 in the 200 back prelims to get into the consolation final, where he placed 16th, while both
Jake Sangren (1:52.26 for 19th) and
Eric Anderson (1:51.89 in the prelims for 21st) also scored. Catanese's time put him in the record book with the seventh-fastest time in Big Red history.
Kevin Brazitis won the consolation final as the lone scorer in the 100 free in 45.11, while
Eric May (18th, 2:03.46 - sixth-best all-time at Cornell) and
Julian Chan (24th, 2:05.78) each scored in the 200 breast.
Harry Harpham became the only Big Red swimmer to advance to the championship final, doing so in the 200 butterfly. His time of 1:48.18 in the finals was good for sixth overall. It was the third-fastest time in Big Red history. Catanese finished 15th after a 1:50.39 in the prelims, good for fifth-place in the Cornell record books.
The highest finisher of the meet for the Big Red was diver
Phillip Truong, who went 339.80 in the prelims of the 3-meter diving competition and 313.15 in the finals to place fifth overall. His preliminary established a new Cornell record. Jon Zollo wasn't far behind in 13th with a 285.90.
James O'Neil earned a top 20 finish and scored with a 211.20 in the preliminaries for 20th place. That was good for ninth all-time at Cornell.
The Big Red closed the meet with a strong swim in the 400 free relay, placing seventh behind the team of
Henry Scott,
PJ Wickwire,
Steven Kwartler and
Kevin Brazitis. The group was seventh in a time of 3:01.89, besting its previous season-best time of 3:05.81. The time was the ninth-fastest ever by a Cornell relay team.
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Cornell men's swimming & diving teams registered multiple season and career highs and had two relay squads post NCAA B cut times on day two of the Ivy League championships on Friday at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool. The Big Red will enter the final day in eighth place with 377.5 team points.
The 200 medley relay squad got Friday evening off to a fantastic start with an NCAA B time to place fifth overall. The team of Jake Sangren, Steven Kwartler, Henry Scott and Kevin Brazitis touched the wall in 1:29.77, more than two and a half seconds faster than its seed tie and just .2 seconds shy of fourth. That time was the fifth-fastest in school history.
In the 1000 free, Taylor Wilson scored in 14th with a time of 9:22.65, more than 25 seconds faster than his seed time. The sophomore was just three seconds off his career-best time. Freshman Michael Reynolds wasn't far behind in 17th with a 9:25.15. His time was a career-best by more than 19 seconds.
Sophomore Ben Catanese made the consolation final in the 400 IM and placed 14th overall in 4:00.50, just off his prelim time of 3:59.75. In doing so, Catanese became just the third Cornellian to go under four minutes in the event. Eric Anderson also scored in 21st overall with a time of 4:05.26 (4:03.50 in the prelims), while Eric May was 23rd in 4:07.43 (4:02.78 in the prelims).
The 100 butterfly was highlighted by a 16th-place effort by Henry Scott, who went 49.11 and 49.42 in his two races on the day. Kevin Brazitis placed 22nd in 49.89, a season-low time, in the bonus final.
Harry Harpham was the top finisher in the 200 free in 13th place overall. He swam a 1:39.00 (good for third-fastest in Cornell history) in the prelims and then went 1:39.63 in the consolation final. PJ Wickwire won the bonus final (1:39.15) for 17th overall, while Ben Itzkowitz wasn't far behind in 19th (1:40.55, a season best).
Steven Kwartler just missed the top 10 in the 100 breast, placing 11th overall in 56.38, just off his 56.21 in the prelims but both marking career-best times. Julian Chan also scored, taking 22nd, with his best time coming in the qualifier with a 57.69.
Another near miss in the top 10 came from Jake Sangren, who placed 11th in the 100 back in 49.70. Mark Stepanian scored in 24th with a time of 52.71, just off his 52.17 in the prelims.
Cornell placed sixth in the 800 free relay with yet another NCAA B cut time, this time in 6:40.05 (nearly 13 seconds ahead of its seed time). The team of Scott, Harpham, Wickwire and Itzkowitz posted the fifth-fastest mark in school history.

The 200 free relay squad of Kevin Brazitis, Steven Kwartler, Zac Mijares-Shafai and Chris Myers finished eighth (1:22.03) to open the night despite shaving more than three seconds off its best time of the season and finishing just .28 seconds out of fourth.
Three swimmers reached the bonus final in the 500 free, with freshman PJ Wickwire leading the way in 20th overall in a time of 4:30.53, the sixth-best time in Cornell history. Taylor Wilson (4:30.55) and Henry Scott (4:32.87), both sophomores, also scored for the Big Red.
Cornell freshman Eric May made a strong push in his first collegiate event, posting a 1:50.85 to reach the consolation final, where he finished 16th overall in the 200 IM. That time was the sixth-best in Big Red history.
The 50 free saw Brazitis win the bonus final, one of four Big Red swimmers who scored in the race. After going 20.65 in the prelims, he bettered that mark by .02 to finish 17th in a career-best time. Also earning spots were Kwartler, who finished 20th in 20.71 (20.61 in the prelims), Chris Myers (20.82) and Mijares-Shafai (20.89 after 20.79 in the prelims) in 23rd and 24th, respectively.
The Big Red had three divers score in the 1-meter event, including Phillip Truong (12th, 276.70) and Jon Zollo (15th, 245.25) in the B final. James O'Neil (21st, 232.00) also earned four team points.
The Big Red 400 medley relay placed seventh in a time of 3:21.34 to close the day, a good three and a half seconds better than its seed time. Jake Sangren, Kwartler, Scott and Brazitis made up the squad that posted the eighth-best time in Cornell history.
