Men's Tennis Drops Non-League Finale Against VCU

3/26/2012 12:23:00 PM

RICHMOND, Va. — The men's tennis team concluded non-league play on Sunday with a 4-1 loss to No. 37 Virginia Commonwealth in a match hindered by intermittent rain.

Because of the dodgy weather conditions, the match started with singles matches and was completed once the host Rams wrapped up the decision. The Big Red's point came from freshman Alex Sidney at the No. 4 spot via 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Antoine Baroz. The win gives Sidney a team-high nine victories on the season.

Nationally ranked Alexis Heugas gave VCU (15-4) a straight-sets victory at the No. 1 spot, with the Big Red also dropping decisions at Nos. 3, 5 and 6. The No. 2 match between freshman Danny Riggs and VCU's Max Wennakoski was not completed.

Cornell (7-11) returns home to open its defense of the Ivy League title at home on Saturday with a match against Columbia at Reis Tennis Center.
