ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams will each welcome three teams to Oxley Equestrian Center for the 2012 USPA Northeast Regionals this weekend. The men's team will be attempting to win its 19th regional crown and its 10th consecutive, while the women are also out for their 19th regional title and its fourth straight.
The women bring a 9-5 overall record, including an 8-2 mark at Oxley, into the tournament. The Big Red open with Harvard on Friday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m., then faces Connecticut on Sunday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m. In the meantime, the Crimson and the Huskies will square off on Saturday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m. to round out the round robin competition.
The women lead the all-time series against UConn 71-34-1, though it had an 11-game win streak snapped earlier this season in Storrs, Conn. by a score of 23-9. Cornell had won an earlier meeting with the Huskies this year, topping Connecticut 17-11 in early November. Cornell holds a commanding 10-0 lead in the all-time series against the Crimson.
The men's team, at 8-6 on the year, will have Skidmore and Connecticut in town. Those two teams will face off with each other on Friday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m. before the round robin competition heats up the following day. Cornell will meet Skidmore on Saturday, March 31 at 1:30 p.m., then plays host to Connecticut on Sunday, April 1 at 1:30 p.m.
Cornell and Skidmore have played each other twice this year with the Big Red taking lopsided victories in each. The two teams met in the season opener and Cornell came home with a 44-0 victory. The Big Red then took an 18-5 win at home. Cornell and Connecticut have split a pair of games this season, with each team winning in its home barn. Dating back to 1978, Cornell holds a decisive 52-20-1 edge in the series against the Huskies.
