ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca College's Monica Capolongo slammed a fifth-inning grand slam to overcome a 3-0 Cornell lead as the Bombers collected a 4-3 victory on Thursday afternoon at Kostrinsky Field. The Big Red took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two before rain forced cancellation of the contest.
The Big Red dropped to 20-21 heading into a key Ivy League road weekend at Princeton.
Freshman
Clare Feely was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI, while
Erin Keene was 2-for-3 with an RBI. The duo combined for four of the team's six hits on the day.
Lauren Marx took the hard-luck loss, surrendering just three hits while striking out seven in 5.1 innings of work.
Jenna Stoller retired the final two hitters, striking out one.
The Big Red took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a one-out double to center by Keene that scored
Jenny Edwards. The visitors then extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth with a two-run single by Feely. The Bombers responded right away, taking advantage of a walk, a bunt single and a hit batter to load the bases. Capolongo took a 1-0 pitched and hammered it to center, clearing the fence for a go-ahead grand slam.
The Big Red will play the Tigers in a four-game series beginning on Saturday, April 28 at 12:30 p.m. Cornell enters the final weekend of league play tied atop the Ivy League South Division standings with Penn at 11-5. The Quakers will play a four-game series with Columbia, and by Sunday either Cornell or Penn likely will stand atop the heap alone.
Princeton still is holding on to slim playoff hopes, but need a four-game sweep of the Big Red, as well as the Quakers to lose at least 3-of-4 to the Lions to stay in the race. One loss would eliminate the Tigers.
If Cornell and Penn end up tied after Sunday, the teams will meet in a one-game playoff in Philadelphia next weekend, with the Ivy League championship series at North Division Harvard the weekend of May 11-13. If either the Big Red or Quakers win the division outright, they will travel to Harvard May 4-6.
