SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — For the second consecutive year, the equestrian team competed in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's Zone 2 Championships on Saturday at Skidmore College. The team finished fourth with 27 points.
Freshman
Georgiana de Rham won the individual intermediate fences title, and senior
Bronwyn Scrivens finished second in the Cacchione Cup competition. Both de Rham and Scrivens have now qualified for IHSA Nationals May 3-6 in Raleigh, N.C.
Skidmore won with 49 points, followed by St. Lawrence (44), Sacred Heart (28), Cornell (27) and Stony Brook (21).
Here is a recap of the weekend from head coach Chris Mitchell:
Most of this young team has never competed here before (old Region), but those of us that have were excited to return because the horses are so wonderful.
We started with Scrivens riding as an Individual in Open fences and finishing fifth. Then Bronwyn needed to hop on her next mount for the Team Open Fences, where she had the same result. Then one more time for Bronwyn for the fences phase of the Cacchione Cup class.
The next rider up for us was de Rham riding in the Individual Intermediate Fences Finals. She rode great to the win and is the Zone 2 Intermediate Fences Champion. This win moves Georgi on to the IHSA Nationals in May.
Emily Kowalchik, junior co-captain, rode for us in the Intermediate Fences and rode well to third. Freshman Maddie Breen was up next as the team rider for Novice Fences and rode well to fourth.
Junior
Nazanin Behzad was up for us in the afternoon in Novice flat, riding well to fourth place. Freshman
Mary Beth Hannon rode for us as our Walk Trot Canter rider and took fifth.
Senior
Amanda Fan was riding for a chance to move on in the Individual Walk Trot class. She rode every well and just missed the cut off by finishing fourth. Junior
Katie Rong was our Team Walk Trot rider and rode very well to third.
The Team Intermediate Flat was next with de Rham back to ride for us and she did just that by placing second, our highest team finish.
So now we are at the end of the day and we have senior co-captain
Katie Fink riding with Scrivens for the Individual Open Flat class. Katie was seventh and Scrivens was sixth.
Scrivens had to mount up again for the Team Open Flat class and improved her placing by two to third. Then one more time for the flat phase of the Cacchione and her ride here combined with her over fences phase placed her 2nd. It was a great finish to a long day.
The Big Red will compete in the Ivy League Championship on April 22.
