LONDON - Muhammad Halim '08 competed at the 2012 London Olympics this morning, representing the U.S. Virgin Islands in the triple jump and produced a 2012 seasonal best en route to a fine performance. With Cornell Head Men's Coach
Nathan Taylor in attendance as part of the U.S. Virgin Islands coaching staff, Halim finished ninth in his flight with a mark of 53-9 3/4 (16.39 meters) despite jumping into a light headwind.
Halim's best mark came on his second attempt. His first (51-0) and third attempts (50-2 3/4), although benefitting from a slight tailwind, were not enough to help him advance.
Halim placed 18th overall and missed advancing to the final by a mere 23 centimeters. But, as always, Halim delivered on the biggest stage, saving his best jump of this 2012 season for the Olympic Games. The Heps will be represented in the final as Harvard grad Samyr Laine (representing Haiti) earned a spot in Thursday's final. The two entrants from the United States also advanced to the final, as Christian Taylor and Will Claye moved on.
Congrats to Olympian Muhammad Halim! An NCAA Champion and one of Cornell's and the Heps' all-time greats, it is great to see him competing at the highest level in the world, where he belongs.
