Harvard Hands Men's Soccer Third Straight Loss in Double Overtime

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – Despite snapping its scoreless drought, the Big Red men's soccer team dropped its third straight game on Saturday afternoon game to Harvard 2-1 on Berman Field.
 
The Crimson got on the board first in the 24th minute when Ross Friedman one-timed an A.J. Agha cross from 20 yards out inside the near post past Cornell goalkeeper Kurtis Teskoski.
 
The Big Red had a flurry of chances early and outshot Harvard 11-4 in the first half, but the Harvard defense came up with some big blocks in close to protect keeper Evan Mendez and enter halftime leading Cornell 1-0.
 
In the 82nd minute, senior defender Jake Kirsch scored Cornell's first goal in 323:74 on a header to tie the game at one.
 
The play started with a Ben Feldman direct kick from 35 yards out on the right side. Feldman sent service into the box and though Harvard's keeper was able to punch the ball away from the net, he put the ball on the foot of junior Peter Chodas, who sent a quick volley back in to Kirsch on the six yard line. Kirsch put the ball high in the middle of the net to beat Mendez, who had shifted to the right on the clear attempt.
 
Cornell kept the pressure on Harvard in the final 20 minutes of regulation – tallying 11 shots – including one by freshman Sebastian Scales at the right post. The Crimson defense again aided their keeper, blocking Scales' scoring attempting and helping to ensure an extra session.
 
The Crimson outshot Cornell 5-0 in the first overtime, but it wasn't until the 102nd minute that a Kevin Harrington header found the back of the net to seal the victory for Harvard.
 
Cornell was called for a foul 25 yards out setting up a direct kick for the visitors. Friedman sent service across the box to the left side, where Harrington was waiting, uncontested, to head in the game-winner.
 
Harvard improves to 2-6-2 overall, 1-1 in Ivy League play, while Cornell falls to 6-3-2, 0-2 Ivy League.
