HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Red volleyball team won the first two sets, but could not hold on as Dartmouth came back to earn the 3-2 victory this evening in Hanover, N.H. In each of the final two sets, the Big Green jumped out to large leads only to see Cornell claw its way back into the set before the home team managed to squeak out the victory. Game scores were 25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 13-15.
The game featured some outstanding offense with both teams putting up solid hitting percentages with Cornell finishing at .227 overall, while the Big Green hit .223.
Cornell (5-9; 2-3 Ivy) had three hitters register double-digit kills –
Breanna Wong (15),
Kelly Marble (14) and
Sarah Kramer (10). Kramer was also one of the most consistent hitters on the floor with a .333 hitting percentage (10-1-27).
Macey Wilson led the Big Red with a .400 hitting percentage, registering nine kills and just one error on 20 attempts. Wilson also finished with four blocks (one solo, three assists). As a team, Cornell finished with 9.0 total blocks, with
Rachel D'Epagnier tallying three solo and one block assist.
Behind the big blockers, Cornell's defense dug 67 balls, led by libero
Natasha Rowland with 24. Marble also tallied 13 digs, while both
Sierra Young and
Alyssa Phelps posted 11 digs. Phelps also registered 49 assists, five kills, two service aces and two block assists.
Dartmouth (8-9, 1-4 Ivy) was led by Molly Kornfeind's 17 kills, while Paige Caridi and Elisa Scudder finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Setter Stacey Benton led the team in both assists (57) and digs (22), as one of five Big Green players to post double-digit digs. Julia Lau (15), Kornfeind (14), Danielle Glinka (14) and Cardi (13) all had a hand in Dartmouth's impressive 84-dig night.
Cornell will play its final non-conference game of the season when it travels south to take on instate rival Binghamton on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
