Late Goal Lifts Penn Over Men's Soccer

10/5/2013 10:15:00 PM

Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Cornell men's soccer's offensive struggles continued Saturday night as the Big Red was shut out for the second straight game and dropped its Ivy League opening contest to Penn 1-0.

Penn (4-6-0, 1-0 Ivy League) broke the scoreless tie early in the 81st minute when Jonny Dolezal redirected a Duke Lacroix corner kick. Dolezal was set up six-yards in front of the right post and got just enough of the ball on the service to send it straight across the goal mouth past Cornell keeper Kurtis Teskoski. The redirection connected with the far left post and found its way to the back of the net.

Cornell (6-2-2, 0-1 Ivy League) was not without scoring opportunities of its own, as the team forced Penn goalkeeper Max Polkinhorne to make seven saves in the contest and outshot the Quakers 14-7.

The Big Red has now gone 242:42 since its last goal; a header by Patrick Slogic in the team's 1-0 win over Buffalo.

Cornell had not lost back-to-back games since October 2010 when the team suffered similar one goals losses at the hands of Yale and non-conference foe Lafayette.

The 2010 season was also the last time the Big Red dropped its conference opener which coincidentally also came in the form of a 1-0 loss to the Quakers.

Cornell will return home to Berman Field next weekend and seek its first Ivy League win against Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m.
