Men's Soccer Rolls Past Columbia, 3-0, on Senior Night

11/16/2013 10:44:00 PM

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – On a night that began with the men's soccer program honoring six departing seniors, it was the underclassmen that helped Cornell down Columbia, 3-0, to close out the 2013 campaign.

With the win, Cornell finishes the season with an overall record of 8-5-4 and 2-4-1 against Ivy League opponents. The team also finished with a season goals-against average of 0.60 – a new program record, while junior goalkeeper Zach Zagorski tied the individual season record set by current volunteer assistant coach Rick Pflasterer with a goals-against average also at 0.60.

Freshmen Vincent Brunetti and Sebastian Scales and sophomore Ben Feldman each scored their first collegiate goals on Saturday, as well as the first goals for their respective classes this season.  All of Cornell's prior scores had come from the junior and senior classes.

It was also the first time Cornell connected for three goals in a game since October 2012.

Brunetti opened the scoring for the Big Red in the 23rd minute with a high blast from the top of the box that beat Columbia's goalkeeper, Luke Rossi, just under the crossbar.

The play started with a direct kick by senior Stephen Reisert just outside of the box that hit a cluster of players inside the six. Patrick Slogic was knocked to the pitch by a Columbia defender, giving the Lions the advantage and a clear attempt. Fortunately for the Big Red, the ball ended up on the foot of Brunetti who gave his team the 1-0 lead.

Early in the second half Feldman increased Cornell's lead to two goals with a hard volley off a Lions' clear that beat Rossi just inside the right post from 25 yards out. Feldman's goal came after a flurry of missed scoring opportunities for Cornell.

Junior Conor Goepel sent a beautiful cross into the six from the left side, but a crashing Brunetti couldn't make contact to get a shot on net. The ball skipped across the end line to Reisert, who quickly played it back into the box. The Columbia defense initially came up big, as they played the ball away from the open net with Rossi down, but this time it was Feldman who was there to capitalize on the failed clear.

In the 68th minute Devin Morgan made a clean tackle to strip a Columbia defender of the ball and maintain possession in the attacking third for Cornell. His tackle kicked the ball out directly to Scales along the touchline. Scales dribbled down the left side and cut through the Columbia defense to the middle of the box before putting a shot on the ground past a sprawling Rossi just inside the right post to give Cornell it's 3-0 margin of victory.

The win was the last on Berman Field for seniors Kurtis Teskoski, Jake Kirsch, Patrick Slogic, Stephen Reisert, Jake Rinow and Benjamin Williams. Slogic help preserve the shutout with two defensive saves, including one in the 71st minute.

As a class the seniors finish with a 35-17-15 record and have the most wins of any Cornell class since the Class of '99 finished with 39.
