ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman forward
Eric Freschi scored his first two collegiate goals and junior forward
Cole Bardreau added a goal and two assists in his return to the lineup after a three-week absence to lead the 18th-ranked Cornell Men's Hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Brown Friday night at Lynah Rink.
Freshman forward
Matt Buckles and sophomore defenseman
Reece Willcox also netted their first collegiate goals, and Cornell (5-3-1, 3-3-1 ECAC Hockey) used five unanswered goals to win its first home game in three weeks. Senior goalie
Andy Iles made 25 saves for the victory.
After Brown (3-4-1, 1-4-1) took the lead on Matt Lorito's goal on a penalty shot just 4 minutes, 33 seconds into the game, the Big Red slowly regained its footing. A quick pass from
Cole Bardreau from the right half wall set up
Patrick McCarron for an open shot from the point. Brown goalie Tyler Steel (23 saves) was able ot save a subtle deflection by Buckles, but the Florida Panthers draft pick found the rebound and, while on his knees, lifted a perfect backhand over Steel's blocker to tie the game at 1 at the 12:43 mark.
Cornell's power play went 1-for-6 on the night and is still the best in the nation with a 29.8 percent conversion rate.
Bardreau then scored the winner at 7:34 of the second period. Brown stormed up ice on a three-on-two, but a shot from the right circle went wide to the far side and caromed hard off the boards and out of the zone. Bardreau collected the puck and started a three-on-two the other way, alertly finding junior defenseman
Joakim Ryan jumping into the play in the high slot. His shot rang off the crossbar, and Bardreau swept in for the conversion to Steel's left.
Five minutes later, Freschi's first goal came after diligent work by his linemates. Sophomore forward
John Knisley stepped in front of a hard-around by a Brown defenseman on the right wall, then wheeled all the way behind the net and up the left wall while drawing two defenders to him. That opened up space for junior forward
Madison Dias, who took Knisley's pass on the half wall and stepped into the left circle. His shot took a slight deflection off Freschi's skate and beneath Steel, building the Big Red lead to 3-1.
The game took a strange turn in the third period, when a clearing attempt from senior defenseman
Kirill Gotovets sailed 100 feet and shattered a pane of glass near the Big Red penalty box and bench. A 20-minute delay ensued as the glass was cleaned up and the ice resurfaced.
After play resumed, Cornell killed off the rest of the Brown power play. Iles made perhaps his biggest save with 8:53 to play, stoning Matt Wahl on a breakaway move to the Bears defenseman's backhand.
The Big Red scored two goals in a span of 46 seconds late in the period to seal the deal. Bardreau set up Willcox for a lengthy empty-net goal with 1:45 to play, then Freschi added his second of the game with 59 seconds to play. It was the first game this season in which the Big Red outshot its opponent.
Cornell returns to home ice at 7 p.m. Saturday, when it plays host to No. 9/9 Yale. The defending national champions extended their unbeaten streak to seven games Friday with a 5-2 win at Colgate.
