ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior forward Brian Ferlin scored a power play goal in the first period and assisted on junior forward Joel Lowry's winning goal early in the second period, and the 18th-ranked Cornell men's hockey team withstood a late surge to hold off No. 9/9 Yale for a 2-1 victory on Saturday night at Lynah Rink.

With the win, Cornell (6-3-1, 4-3-1 ECAC Hockey) extended its winning streak to three games while halting the seven-game unbeaten streak for Yale (5-2-2, 3-1-2), the defending national champion. Senior goalie Andy Iles played a huge role in the victory for the Big Red, making 30 saves – perhaps none bigger than back-to-back saves on Mike Doherty and a rebound offering from Stu Wilson with two minutes remaining in the third period.

Ferlin's sixth goal of the season gave the Big Red the lead just 6 minutes, 31 seconds into the game. The goal came just four seconds after a Yale player was whistled for tripping. With the faceoff to the right of Bulldogs goalie Alex Lyon, junior captain John McCarron tied up his man and senior forward Dustin Mowrey crashed in to sweep the puck back to Ferlin on the left point. With traffic congesting Lyon's view, Ferlin's shot sailed just inside the near post to ignite Lynah crowd.

Cornell had just one other power play on the evening and while it didn't directly produce a goal, the Big Red took a two-goal lead just 17 seconds later. With sustained possession in the Yale zone, Ferlin fed a pass from the left half wall to junior defenseman Joakim Ryan at the point. His one-timer thumped off Lyon's pads, but Lowry slammed home the rebound to give Cornell a 2-0 lead.

The Big Red has the best power play in the nation, converting at 30.6 percent, thanks in part to six goals on the man advantage over the last four games.

Yale drew to within one goal at the 7:51 mark of the second period on Cody Learned's first collegiate goal, but that's as close as the visitors would get. After a rare defensive-zone turnover by the Big Red with 12:25 to play in the third, Iles stopped Jesse Root from point-blank range and sophomore forward John Knisley sprawled to block Kenny Agostino's rebound attempt toward the open net.

Cornell played a very disciplined game and was whistled for just one penalty – a too many men on the ice infraction midway through the second period, which was successfully killed off. It was the fifth time in the last six games the Big Red yielded three or fewer power plays for its opposition.

The Big Red wraps up its season-high three-game home stand when it returns to non-league play 7 p.m. Tuesday against Niagara at Lynah Rink.
