Dartmouth controlled the first 30 minutes, though it was a jump ball in the end zone on the final play of the first half that put the Big Red in the three touchdown hole at halftime. Williams, who ran for 85 yards in the first half, connected with Bo Patterson as the clock hit zero after he was flushed out of the pocket 25 yards away. Pierre also found the end zone twice to cap 11-play drives of 85 and 67 yards to get the home team ahead.

While the Big Green piled up 366 yards in the first half, Cornell couldn't get things going offensively. The Big Red had 83 yards at the break, with Mathews completing 5-of-10 passes for 47 yards. He jumped into the top 25 all-time in FCS history in terms of passing yards in the first half, but several untimely drops did in drives. Hagy ran eight times for 30 yards as the Big Red worked at establishing the run game early.

Freshman punter Chris Fraser continued to be a bright spot, averaging 44.0 yards on his five punts and pinning Dartmouth inside its own 20 three times. Minor also was a shining star on the defensive end with five tackles, including three for a loss, and a pass breakup in the end zone m fourth down to end a potential Dartmouth scoring drive.

Cornell's defense stiffened after halftime, forcing consecutive punts and a pair of field goals, including one defending a short field, but the offense couldn't sustain drives and the Big Green built its lead to 27-0 before the Big Red got on the scoreboard with an impressive 11-play, 63-yard touchdown drive that ended with Mathews hitting Gellatly from eight yards out. Cornell only got the ball back once more after scoring with 10:11 to play as part of a day it held the ball for 38:19 of the 60-minute game.
