Box Score HANOVER, N.H. – The Big Red field hockey team ended the 2013 season on a high-note today, as it defeated Dartmouth, 3-0, in Hanover, N.H. With the win, Cornell finishes the season at 10-7 overall and 4-3 in the Ivy League, good for third overall in the conference standings. Cornell has now reached 10 wins six times during head coach
Donna Hornibrook's 10-year campaign with the Big Red and it is the most victories since the 2010 squad finished at 11-5.
In their final game wearing the Red and White, seniors
Hannah Balleza,
Mallory Bannon,
Elly Plappert and
Carolyn Horner were all instrumental in the victory. Balleza registered one assist on the day to finish in fourth place in Cornell history for both career points (91) and career assists (21). Plappert scored twice to finish the season ranked second on the team with a career-high nine goals, while Bannon was crucial in the defensive backfield.
With the shutout win, Horner moved into second place in Cornell history for eight career shutouts, and seventh place overall with 17 career victories. She also finished the game with five saves to move into 10th place in Big Red history with 229 career stops.
Additionally, Marissa Siergiej finished the day with one goal, including the game-winner, and one assist, while
Georgia Lord added a helper.
Cornell held the slim edge in shots (16-13) and penalty corners (10-9), while the Big Green held the 7-5 edge in saves, with six credited to goalie Ellen Meyer and one defensive save credited to Brooke Van Valkenberg.
Despite the equality of the stats, the Big Red completely carried the flow of the game and controlled the pace from the opening whistle. The visitors put relentless pressure on the Big Green and kept the ball in their offensive end for long stretches of play.
After going into the half tied at 0-0, the Big Red broke open the game with back-to-back goals just 44 seconds apart early in the second half. The first Cornell goal came off a penalty corner as
Marisa Siergiej took the push on the far left side of the circle and beat Meyer to put the visitors up 1-0 at the 36:52 mark. Balleza and Standiford were credited with the assist.
The Big Green lost the ball off the restart and an odd-man rush put Cornell up 2-0 when Plappert tipped in a pass from Lord.
Cornell sealed the game with another penalty corner goal in the 60th minute as Plappert tipped a Siergiej shot into the far post.
