ITHACA, N.Y. — Juniors Cole Bardreau and Joakim Ryan each had a goal and an assist to help the men's hockey team rally from a two-goal deficit to salvage a 2-2 tie with Colgate on Saturday night at Lynah Rink. Both Big Red goals were scored on five-on-three power plays, leaving the team 7-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in ECAC Hockey heading into a three-week hiatus.

Senior goaltender Andy Iles made 20 saves to earn his program-record 14th career tie. He made a pair of game-saving stops with 4 minutes, 10 seconds to play in the third period on Kyle Baun's breakaway, then Tylor Spink's rebound bid.

After a fairly uneventful scoreless first period, Colgate (8-7-2, 5-3-1 ECAC Hockey) took control of the game with a fast start to the second. At the end of the first shift of the period, the Big Red turned the puck over on an attempted breakout. The Raiders' Brett Corkey immediately whipped the puck from the left point toward goal, where Colgate's Darcy Murphy deflected a shot on Iles. The Big Red goalie made the save, but Murphy was first to the rebound and shoveled the puck in for a 1-0 Raiders lead just 50 seconds into the frame.

Colgate then doubled its lead 3:01 later on Daniel Gentzler's first goal of the season. Tim Harrison created a turnover on the forecheck, allowing defenseman Jake Kulevich to crash the net from the left circle. Iles once again made the initial save, but Gentzler was free on the left post to tap in the rebound and but the Big Red in a 2-0 hole.

The Big Red's power play then came to the rescue. Entering the night ranked third in the country with a 26.2 percent conversion rate, Cornell scored its third and fourth goals of the season on the two-man advantage. The first came at the 9:07 mark of the second period on Ryan's fourth goal of the season. The play started with Bardreau blasting a shot from the left point that was blocked by Colgate defenseman Kevin Lough. Brian Ferlin then won the battle with Lough for possession in the corner, allowing John McCarron to sweep in and send the puck back to Bardreau. He passed along the blue line to Ryan in the middle, and he hammered a shot that went by the blocker of Colgate goalie Charlie Finn.

The Big Red penalty kill was a perfect 6-for-6 on the night, with Iles backstopping the effort. He made a save on Andrew Black's one-timer 4:07 into the third period to keep the hosts' deficit to one goal.

Cornell earned another five-on-three advantage a few minutes later, needing 59 seconds to tie the game on Bardreau's fifth goal of the season with 12:19 to play in regulation time. After a few chances came up empty, the Big Red quickly wheeled the puck from Joel Lowry on the right wing to Ryan at the center point and over to Bardreau for a one-timer at the top of the left circle. His blast beat Finn to the blocker side and tied the game at 2. It was eerily similar to last season's matchup between the Central New York rivals at Lynah Rink, when Cornell also rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 tie -- with Bardreau scoring one of the goals in the third period.

But there was more work to be done Saturday before both teams skated away with a point in the ECAC Hockey standings. Reece Willcox saved the day by sweeping away a shot by Black off the goal line with 10:43 to play. Baun's breakaway a little later was then foiled by Iles' left pad, and Spink's rebound attempt was smothered by the Big Red goalie as the Colgate centerman watched on with his arms in the air in premature celebration. An officials' video review revealed what Iles already knew -- the puck ended up four inches in front of the goal line.

Cornell's last major threat was a semi-breakaway from sophomore Christian Hilbrich with 1:44 to play, but his shot slipped wide of the left post. Neither team threatened in the five-minute overtime session. Finn finished the game with 26 saves for Colgate.

The Big Red will take a three-week break from game action for final exams and the holidays before picking up again at the annual Florida College Hockey Classic in Estero, Fla. Cornell will take on New Hampshire on Dec. 28, then oppose either Princeton or Maine the following day.
