ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red track and field teams will be hosting the Deneault Invitational this weekend in its final tune-up before next weekend's Indoor Heptagonal Championships.
The Deneault Invitational, held at Barton Hall, begins on Saturday at 10 a.m. and runs through the early evening. Nineteen different schools will have athletes competing at Barton Hall along with six club teams. Included in the competition will be Albany, Buffalo, Cortland, Ithaca College, Siena and St. Lawrence along with 13 other schools.
The Deneault Invitational is held annually in honor of Marc Deneault, who died tragically in a car accident in 1999. Deneault was a top sprinter for the Big Red who had earned his sash by scoring at the Heps as a freshman. His twin brother, Richard, who was also a member of the team, and his family continue to support the meet by attending and providing T-shirts to event winners as well as "Meet MVPs" for both the men and the women on the track and in the field.
Competition kicks off with the women's weight throw at 10 a.m., followed 15 minutes later by track events starting with the women's 3K. Festivities close with the 4x400 relays at 5:10 p.m. and an awards ceremony at 5:30 p.m.
The Big Red track teams are coming off very strong weekends last week in Cleveland and at Barton Hall. On the men's side,
Nick Wade ran the first sub-4:00 mile in school history at the SPIRE Invitational, breaking the school record with a performance of 3:59.998. The Big Red women saw 15 ECAC-qualifying times for their weekend including three new times in the top three all-time in the 3K.
Rachel Sorna broke her own school record,
Emily Shearer turned in the second-fastest time in Cornell history and
Katie Kellner had the third-best time.
