Howe Cup brackets

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The women's squash team was defeated by Penn, 8-1, on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Howe Cup national championship, which is being hosted by Yale.
 
Senior co-captain Jaime Laird accounted for the Big Red's lone point with a five-game victory at the No. 3 spot. Laird fought off Rachael Goh after winning the first two games and the decisive fifth game by identical 11-7 scores. Laird's win avenged a three-game loss to Goh at No. 3 last Sunday, when the Quakers defeated the Big Red, 7-2, in the teams' regular-season finale.
 
Cornell forced three matches to five games, with freshman Abbey Foster (No. 4) and sophomore Lindsay Seginson (No. 8) competing in the others. With the loss, the Big Red will fall into the consolation semifinals, where it will take on seventh-seeded Stanford at 4 p.m.

Stanford was toppled by second-seeded Harvard in Friday's second quarterfinal, 9-0.  Cornell (12-6) is seeded sixth, which is where it was ranked for the entire season after placing sixth in the 2012 Howe Cup. An upset of then-No. 6 ranked Stanford in the consolation semifinals of last year's event helped the Big Red move up to its final placing, which was tied for its second-highest finish in the program's 16-year history.
 
In Friday's other quarterfinals, top-ranked Princeton defeated eighth-seeded Brown, and fourth-seeded Trinity beat fifth-seeded host Yale.
