Women's Tennis Ties Best Start in Program History

3/10/2013 4:53:00 PM

PITTSBURGH – The women's tennis team has tied its best spring start in program history, pushing its record to 7-0 with a 7-0 sweep of Duquesne on Sunday morning at Alpha Tennis and Fitness. The only other time the Big Red won its first seven matches of the spring season came in 1996.

The Big Red's second-ever meeting against the Dukes ended in similar fashion to its first clash in 1994 – with Cornell registering a 7-0 victory. The first step toward that result on Sunday was the Big Red's two wins in the three doubles matches to take the first point. Senior Sarah O'Neil and sophomore Lauren Frazier won their clash at the No. 1 spot, 8-5, with the all-freshman tandem of Christy Kung and Dena Tanenbaum locking down an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot.

Cornell then won all six singles matches in straight sets. Freshman Laila Judeh dropped just one game in her win over Alexa Miller at the No. 4 spot, and Frazier dropped just three games in her victory at No. 6.

The Big Red returns home for its last non-league match of the season at the friendly confines of Reis Tennis Center, when it hosts Binghamton at 4 p.m. Friday. Cornell will then make its annual Spring Break trip the following week before preparing for Ivy League competition.
