DeLAND, Fla. – Cornell rallied late in game two to show the fight head coach
Dick Blood will be looking for all season, but it wasn't enough to avoid nine defensive errors and a sweep at the hands of Stetson on Tuesday evening at Patricia Wilson Field. The Big Red slipped to 8-9, while the Hatters improved to 17-9.
JJ Briggs led the offense with two of the team's three hits in game one. In all, seven of the Hatters' 10 runs in the first game and 13 of the 17 plated in the doubleheader were unearned. The Big Red committed nine errors in the two games after being charged with just 14 in the first 15 games of the year.
Cornell got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a pair of walks and an outfield error. That would be the highlight for the Big Red, who saw the home team score four in the bottom of the inning before cruising. It was 6-1 after three and 9-2 after four as Stetson pounded out 11 hits.
Game two saw the Big Red's offense come alive, posting 10 hits and rallying from a 6-3 deficit in the seventh to send it into extra innings. Pinch-hitter Linda Laefuer hit the Big Red's fourth double of the game with two outs in the top of the seventh to square the contest at 6-6 before the home team plated one run in the eighth to end the contest.
Junior
Alyson Onyon took the hard-luck loss, scattering nine hits in 7.1 innings and allowing just one earned run in falling to 6-3 on the year.
Christina Villalon,
Jenny Edwards and
Emily Weinberg each had a pair of hits in the loss.
Cornell returns to action when it visits Jacksonville for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
