Women's Tennis Wraps Up Non-League Slate With 11th Straight Win

3/21/2013 5:50:00 PM

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The women's tennis blew by New Jersey Institute of Technology, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon to wrap up a three-match sweep of the team's annual Spring Break trip. The Big Red improved to 11-0 on the season, which is the best record across the country in Division I.

Senior Christine Ordway and freshmen Dena Tanenbaum and Christy Kung won their singles and doubles matches against NJIT (9-6). Kung and junior Ryann Young got the match started with a 8-2 victory at the No. 2 spot. Ordway and Tanenbaum competed together for the first time this season, defeating Ksenia Kuzmenko and Carolina Zanotta, 8-3, from the No. 1 position to lock up the first point. Sophomore Lauren Frazier and freshman Laila Judeh were leading their No. 3 match, 5-2, when it was halted to start singles play.

Cornell had the match sewed up before NJIT got its lone point. Young and Judeh dropped just four games apiece in their victories at the Nos. 2 and 4 spots, respectively, to push the Big Red lead to 3-0. Tanenbaum then clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Martina Tripcovici at No. 3 to improve to 11-0 in singles matches this season.

After the Highlanders got on the board with a win at No. 1, Kung finished up her win at No. 6 in straight sets. Frazier then outlasted Natalia Melibeu at No. 5 in a third-set tiebreaker to close out the match.

Cornell finished the non-league portion of its schedule undefeated for the first time in program history. The Big Red will return to Ithaca, N.Y. to prepare for its Ivy League opener against Columbia at noon on Saturday, March 30 at Reis Tennis Center.
