CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Cornell softball team closed out its Spring Break trip by rallying late for a 4-3, 10-inning win in the opener, then breaking out the big bats in a 16-6 win to sweep Manhattan on Saturday afternoon The Big Red improved to 10-12, while the Jaspers slipped to 7-13.

Cornell entered the day on a five-game losing skid, its longest since 2005, but left the field Saturday to come home from Spring Break with a two-game win streak in tow. It ended its weeklong trip with a 7-7 mark.

Cornell twice rallied from a deficit with one out remaining, in both the seventh and eighth innings, en route to a 4-3 triumph in nine innings. In the seventh, Manhattan made an error to allow the tying run after Emily Weinberg singled to lead off the inning, then advanced to third after a pair of groundouts. Kristen Towne's grounder to short was misplayed, and the Big Red were able to tie the game.

In the eighth, Manhattan again regained the lead, but Cornell stormed back in the bottom of the inning. This time, it was Michiko McGivney with a double to plate to tying run. In the ninth it was Christina Villalon's turn to be the hero. The junior singled with one out to score Weinberg with the winning run.

Neither pitcher allowed an earned run, but Cornell's Alyson Onyon was just a little bit better in picking up her seventh win of the year. She went all nine innings, scattering seven hits and a walk while striking out four. McGivney was 2-for-5 and Erin Belles was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.

Game two was closer than the 16-6 final, as the Big Red exploded for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning. The 16 runs ranks eighth in a single game all-time at Cornell, while the 17 hits stands 10th. The Big Red had six doubles, tied for third in a single game, and smashed four home runs, tied for fifth in school history. The team also drew eight walks, good for sixth in a single game.

Freshman Meg Parker had a monster day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and three runs scored. Michiko McGivney was 2-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI. Lauren Bucolo was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI, and Weinberg, Villalon and Jenny Edwards also had a pair of hits in the win. Edwards hit her second home run of the year as well.

While the bats came up big, so did Sammy Roth out of the bullpen after Parker went three innings, allowing three hits and three runs. Roth also surrendered three hits and three runs (two earned), but didn't allow a walk and struck out seven to pick up her second win of 2013.

Cornell will open its home and Ivy League schedules next weekend with doubleheaders against Yale (Saturday, March 30 at 12:30 p.m.) and Brown (Sunday, March 31 at 12:30 p.m.) at Niemand*Robison Field.
