ITHACA, N.Y. – The last undefeated Division I women's tennis team was finally toppled on Saturday when No. 64 Cornell was shut out by No. 62 Columbia, 7-0, at Reis Tennis Center in the teams' Ivy League opener. While the Lions swept the match, three of the singles matches went to three sets and two others went to a first-set tiebreaker.
Columbia (8-4) secured the doubles point with victories at the first and third spots. The No. 2 doubles match, featuring the Big Red pair of senior
Christine Ordway and freshman
Dena Tanenbaum, was tied at 6 when play was halted.
After the Lions took a 2-0 lead on a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles, the remaining matches were all tightly contested. Junior
Ryann Young took Bianca Sanon to a tiebreaker in the first set and took four games in the second set, but Sanon held on to make the score 3-0. Ordway rallied from a 7-5 loss in the first set to Kanika Vaidya at No. 2 with a 6-4 edge in the second set, but the Lions' freshman took the third set to clinch the match.
Cornell (11-1), which is the final Division I team to lose a dual match after Buffalo's 10-match winning streak was halted Friday by Miami (Ohio), resumes Ivy League play next weekend with matches against Dartmouth and Harvard.
