Game 1 Box Score (Cornell 8, Brown 5)
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Junior
Jenny Edwards was 3-for-3 with two home runs as Cornell picked up its first Ivy League win of 2013, knocking off Brown 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. Game two was postponed until Monday at 11 a.m. due to rain. The Big Red improved to 11-14 (1-2 Ivy), while Brown slipped to 6-11 (0-3 Ivy).
Edwards hit two of the team's four long balls despite a drizzling rain that grew more intense as the game went on. Cornell scored a run in every inning but the fifth, led 7-0 after four innings and overcame a late Bears rally to pick up the victory.
Junior
Lauren Bucolo was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and both
Erin Belles and
Meg Parker also slammed homers for the home team. In the circle,
Alyson Onyon scattered five hits in six innings of work to pick up the win. She surrendered just one run.
For Brown, Stephanie Thompson, Kelsey Williams and Jen Kries each had a pair of hits.
Cornell scored one in the first, two in the second and three in the third to race out to the lead, then held on late as Brown scored four runs in the top of the seventh to cut into the deficit.
A
Christina Villalon single in the first, her fifth consecutive at bat with a hit, opened the scoring, followed by back-to-back homers by Edwards and Belles in the second to make it 3-0. Bucolo had an RBI double and both
Linda Laeufer and
Emily Weinberg and run-scoring singles in the third to make it 6-0. The home team tacked on a run in the fourth when Edwards hit her second bomb of the night and added another insurance run when
Meg Parker led off the sixth with a homer.
After clawing together a run in the sixth, the Bears went station to station for a four-run rally that ended with a runner still on base as
Sammy Roth retired the final batter on a pop-up to short.
