FAIRFAX, Va. – For the first time in more than two years, the Cornell softball team visited George Mason and didn't walk away from a day with a split. Unfortunately for the Big Red, Monmouth and Logwood made sure of that fact. The Big Red dropped a 2-1 contest to Monmouth in the morning, then was dropped 8-0 by Longwood in the afternoon session to fall to 2-4 on the year.
Jenny Edwards had two hits in the opener, while
Erin Belles drove in the game-tying run in the fourth inning against the Hawks. Monmouth regained the lead with a single run in the fifth and then held on, handing
Alyson Onyon the hard-luck loss. She went the distance, scattering five hits and three walks and surrendered just one earned run. Onyon struck out eight hitters.
Cornell put the tying run on second in both the fifth and sixth innings with less than two outs, but couldn't knot the game.
Leanne Iannucci was 2-for-2 in the nightcap, while
Linda Laeufer and
Lauren Bucolo also had base hits, but Cornell couldn't come back after the Lancers scored in the first to take the lead for good. Longwood's Brooke Short was 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBI. Libby Morris went the distance and scattered four hits in the five innings.
