NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Columbia softball team turned the tables on Cornell, sweeping a doubleheader from the Big Red on Sunday a day after dropping a pair at Columbia Softball Stadium. The Lions captured 3-2 and 7-0 triumphs as the teams split the four-game series down the middle.
Game 1
Cornell jumped out to the 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a two-out, two-run single by
Linda Laeufer. Columbia quickly answered by knotting the score in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a pair of uncharacteristic Big Red errors to plate the tying runs. A two-out double by Emily Caruthers in the second scored the go-ahead run, and both pitchers were lights out the rest of the way.
Onyon surrendered just one hit over her final four innings and took the hard-luck loss, scattering five hits and surrendering just one earned run while striking out six. Emily Kenyon was just a bit better, allowing seven hits and striking out nine in her complete game win.
Emily Weinberg continued her hot hitting in the series with a 3-for-4 showing, while Laeufer was 1-for-2 with a walk and her two RBI.
Game 2
The Lions took control of game two in the third, scoring six runs in the frame with the big blow coming on a bases-clearing triple by Liz Caggiano. Columbia again took advantage of two Cornell errors in the inning around five base hits. Columbia added an insurance run in the fourth and the Big Red never challenged.
Michiko McGivney and
Jenny Edwards each had a pair of hits in the loss.
