ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior
Christine Ordway, sophomore
Lauren Frazier and freshmen
Dena Tanenbaum and
Laila Judeh won singles matches to lead the women's tennis team to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Penn on Sunday at Reis Tennis Center.
The Big Red finished 3-4 in the Ivy League and 14-4 overall – a program record for victories in a spring season. It was the team's best finish in the Ancient Eight under third-year head coach
Mike Stevens. The only other time Cornell has gone 3-4 in Ivy play since 1997 came in 2007 under Laura Glitz.
When also taking into account the team's sparkling 11-0 record in nonleague play, Cornell reached the 14-win plateau for the first time since the program began competing in 1973. The Big Red had won 13 on three other occasions — 1994 and 1996 under head coach Linda Myers, and 2001 under the direction of Angela Rudert.
To get to 14 wins, the Big Red had to rally on Sunday in its Senior Day against Penn. The Quakers took the early 1-0 lead by winning two of three doubles matches, including the clinching match in a tiebreaker at the No. 1 position. Frazier and junior
Ryann Young won their No. 2 doubles match for the Big Red.
Cornell answered back by taking the first two singles matches to be completed. Ordway made quick work of Stephanie Do, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot, then Tanenbaum gave the Big Red a 2-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Jaime Yapp-Shing at No. 4.
Penn (10-8, 2-5 Ivy) then tied the score at 2 before the Big Red clinched the match with victories from the bottom two spots of the ladder. Frazier (No. 6) and Judeh (No. 5) won by matching 6-4, 6-2 scores. The win was just the fifth in 33 all-time meetings against the Quakers.
