BUFFALO, N.Y. – Goalkeepers Tori Christ and Kelsey Tierney combined for a five-save shutout as the women's soccer team played a scoreless draw with Buffalo on Tuesday night at UB Stadium.

Playing just miles away from her hometown of Amherst, Christ made one save in the first half. Tierney was then called upon to make a handful of game-saving stops in the second half and in overtime, racking up four saves in all.

Cornell (1-1-1) was largely the better team in the first half, but couldn't take the lead. A nice move by senior midfielder Rachel Nichols sent freshman forward Dempsey Banks into the left side of the Bulls' box. She was able to get off a left-footed shot that was foiled by a defender, but pressure forced a poor clearing attempt. Freshman midfielder Ellie Crowell gathered and took a shot from 15 yards that clanked off the crossbar and out of play.

Banks then had another chance in the final minute before the half with a side volley that bounced just wide of the post to left of sprawling Buffalo goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon.

Christ's only save came in the 12th minute, but Tierney was called into action in earnest after the half. A long Buffalo throw-in from about 30 yards out was flicked on into the box in the 61st minute. Katie Roberts got off a shot from 12 yards that was stopped by the outstretched right foot of Tierney. The freshman keeper then pushed a shot from distance harmlessly off the crossbar with less than three minutes remaining before the extra sessions.

Cornell's best chance for an overtime winner came with 2:20 remaining in the second frame. Banks took a sharp-angle shot from the left side that was spilled by the keeper. A Big Red attacker came in from the far post and was able to turn a shot toward goal, only to be thwarted by a defender.

The Big Red is now 3-1-2 all-time against Buffalo (2-1-1). This marks the first time since 2005 that Cornell has begun the season with two clean sheets in its first three games.

Cornell will return home for a stretch of six contests without a true road game, starting with a three-game home stand. The Big Red will play host to Marist at 5:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a clash with Albany at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Both games serve as the first game in doubleheaders with the Cornell men's soccer teams.
