ITHACA, N.Y. – An early
Atticus DeProspo goal proved enough for both a 1-0 Big Red victory over previously undefeated Loyola Marymount and Cornell's third straight CU Inaria Classic title.
DeProspo scored his third career goal, and first of the season, in the eighth minute on what appeared to be a cross deep in the box. Loyola goalkeeper Paul Blanchette came out to cut off the angle, but mishandled the ball and deflected it into the open net behind him.
DeProspo was named to the All-Tournament Team for this weekend's performance.
Cornell finished with a slight 8-6 edge in shots, while LMU had 11 corner kick opportunities in the contest. Both Blanchette and Cornell goalkeeper
Zach Zagorski finished with three saves. With the victory, Zagorski earned his first career shutout for the Big Red.
Cornell (now 3-0-1) won the CU Inaria Classic trophy by virtue of two head-to-head wins on the weekend. LMU (3-1) and Colgate (1-5) both finished at 1-1, while Cal State Fullerton (1-5) concluded its East Coast road trip at 0-2.
Conor Goepel was named the tournament's Offensive MVP following his performance in Friday's overtime win when he assisted the game-tying goal and scored the game winner in the first overtime. Goepel was also a commanding presence in the midfield for the Big Red on the weekend.
Defensive MVP honors went to senior captain
Jake Rinow, who scored the game-tying goal with just over a minute to play in regulation in Friday's come-from-behind win over Cal State Fullerton. Rinow also made several clutch plays to shut down the opposition's attack both in transition and on set pieces.
Other members of the Big Red named to the All-Tournament Team included:
Patrick Slogic,
Jake Kirsch and
Benjamin Williams. Slogic and Kirsch are both key components of the team's stifling defense who also have the ability to factor into Cornell scoring on set pieces. Williams, a defensive-minded midfielder, aided the Big Red in transition and successfully contested 50-50 balls all weekend long.
Up next for Cornell is the final game of a three-game home stand, as the Big Red host Binghamton University on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 pm.
