Volleyball Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker To Rutgers

Box Score PITTSBURGH – The Big Red volleyball team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Rutgers in its final game of the Panther Invitational this morning at Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, Pa. Cornell won the first and third set, but couldn't come back in the decisive fifth. Game scores were: 25-20, 14-25, 25-22, 14-25, 10-15.

With the loss, Cornell falls to 3-6 on the season, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 4-10.

The Big Red had a pair of hitters reach double-digits, with Breanna Wong (15) and Sierra Young (11) leading the way. Young also added 20 digs for her first double-double of the season. Libero Natasha Rowland finished with a match-high 34 digs and setter Alyssa Phelps handed out 40 assists to go along with 12 digs. 

Rutgers was led by Alex Lassa's 22 kills, while Rachel Andreassian and Sofi Cucuz added 11 kills each. Setter Nicole Bayer registered 39 assists and Ali Schroeter finished with 27 digs.

Cornell hit just .080 for the match, with negative hitting percentages in two of the three sets which it lost. The Scarlet Knights, on the other hand, connected at a .139 clip.

Cornell opens up Ivy League play against Columbia at Newman Arena on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2:00 p.m.
