Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – Elise DiDonato scored less than two minutes into the second overtime period to spoil the Big Red field hockey team's upset bid and No. 18 Drexel stole the a 2-1 victory this afternoon on Marsha Dodson Field in Ithaca, N.Y.
Cornell had a solid showing both offensively and defensively, outshooting the Dragons (17-14) and out-cornering the visitors (11-6). The Big Red also weathered the storm when yellow cards forced the team to play two-men down for the final 1:33 of regulation, and one-man down for the first 3:27 of the first overtime session.
Drexel goalie Jantien Gunter finished with eight saves, while
Elizabeth Schaeffler stopped three shots, all of which came after halftime.
As strong as Cornell was at the end of the contest, it was Drexel that started the game hot, wasting little time in taking the early 1-0 lead, scoring in the second minute of action on its very first penalty corner attempt of the game. Jessica McCarthy blasted a straight shot into the goal with Meghan Plank and Lauren Hibshman credited with the assists.
Midway through the half,
Ann DiPastina evened the game at 1-1 with a great individual effort. She took advantage of a foul just outside the circle with a quick restart, drove through the defense and blasted the ball through Gunter's legs and into the far post.
Both teams had legitimate chances the rest of the half, but the goalies were up to the task to send the teams into the break deadlocked at 1-1.
The second half and the first overtime was more of the same, as the teams traded scoring opportunities, but both goalies made great saves and several outstanding plays to break up offensive chances and the Big Red was force into its first double overtime contest since last season against Brown.
The Big Red hits the road next weekend for a pair of contests at Yale and Holy Cross. Cornell faces the Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 5 at noon, before taking on the Crusaders on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:00 p.m.
