ITHACA, N.Y. — Former All-Americans Maite Sturm and Caroline Ramsey '23 have joined the Cornell field hockey coaching staff as assistant coaches, it was announced today by head coach Andy Smith.
"I am thrilled to welcome Maite and Caroline to our staff. We are delighted that we have managed to attract two of the brightest hockey minds around to join us and work with us this season," Smith said. "Both bring a wealth of knowledge and different playing and cultural experiences, and we are excited for this fall. Maite was by far and away our top candidate for the position, and I think it is a real coup for our program that we have persuaded her to join us. Her knowledge and experiences both here and abroad will give us a new level of expertise within the program. Caroline will be with us on a temporary basis until she returns to the U.S. national team. We are thrilled that she will be able to impart her knowledge gained since graduation on our current crop of players. Her previous experiences at Cornell will also have a major impact on our current team."

Sturm arrives at Cornell after two seasons on staff at Temple, helping guide the Owls to a 12-6 record and a berth in the Big East final in 2024 — the program's first appearance in the title game since 2015 — followed by a 12-6 campaign in 2025. During Sturm's tenure, Temple's offense ranked among the top units in the Big East both seasons. In 2025, the Owls ranked second in the conference in scoring (2.45), led by league co-Offensive Player of the Year Peyton Rieger, who posted the most points (27) by a Temple player since 2015, and conference Freshman of the Year Lucia Magro, who became the first Temple rookie to reach 20 points since 1987. Rieger and Magro both earned First Team All-Big East and Second Team NFHCA All-Region honors. Temple notched notable wins over Delaware, CAA champion Drexel, Atlantic 10 finalist Richmond and No. 14 Yale in 2025, with three of the Owls' four Big East losses decided by a single goal. In 2024, Temple led the conference with seven shutouts behind NFHCA All-American back and Defensive Player of the Year Alize Maes, who also paced the team's offense with 20 points.
Before joining Temple's staff, Sturm coached at Scholarbrook, her club team in Germany. She was a decorated student-athlete at VCU, earning Third Team All-America honors as a senior and three-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 recognition. Sturm started all 82 games she appeared in during her Rams career, totaling 26 goals and 36 assists for 88 points, and helped VCU reach the spring 2021 NCAA Tournament. She graduated from VCU in 2021 with a degree in business.
A former professional player, Sturm competed as a defender and midfielder for HTC Uhlenhorst in Germany's NRW league. This past summer, she led the U.S. Over-45 Women's Masters Team at the 2026 WMH Indoor World Cup in Nottingham, England.
Ramsey was an NFHCA Second Team All-America selection and SYNAPSE Sports First Team pick as a senior in 2023, and a Third Team All-American in 2022. The 2023 NFHCA Mideast Regional Player of the Year, as well as Ivy League and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, Ramsey was a First Team All-Ivy and NFHCA All-Region pick for the third time in her career in 2023. She ranked second nationally in goals (24) and points (54), both single-season school records, while leading the Big Red to a second-place finish in the Ancient Eight and a school-record 12 wins. She was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week four times, was credited with the game-winner in eight of the team's victories, and added three defensive saves, second-most in the Ivy League, from her position in the midfield.
Named NFHCA National Offensive Player of the Week once and an honorable mention pick the week prior, Ramsey had seven multi-goal games, including four hat tricks and a four-goal effort against Sacred Heart that matched the Cornell single-game record. Three of her game-winners came in Ivy League contests, where she averaged 1.0 goals and 2.29 points per game.
The three-year captain graduated with the Cornell single-game record for goals (four), as well as season and career records for goals, game-winning goals, points and defensive saves. A four-year member of the U.S. national team, Ramsey graduated from Cornell in 2023 magna cum laude with a degree in Biological Sciences.
