Niagara Hands Men's Soccer First Loss

9/29/2013 6:47:00 PM

Box Score NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - The Niagara University Purple Eagles handed the Big Red men's soccer team its first loss in 2013 in the form of a 1-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon and snapped the team's 25-game non-conference regular season unbeaten streak which dated back to September 2011.

Niagara's Ken Cooper put his team on top in the 48th minute after he collected a pass from teammate Callum Willmett and put a shot past keeper Kurtis Teskoski in close.

The Big Red - playing it's third game in six days - again struggled to capitalize on prime scoring opportunities late in the game.

In the 71st minute, defender Jake Rinow one-timed a Conor Goepel cross from the right side straight into the crossbar.

And then in the 87th minute, Niagara keeper Brenden Ottman stopped a Benjamin Williams header, but stepped out of bounds so Cornell was awarded a corner kick and another potential scoring opportunity. After the Purple Eagles attempted to clear, the ball was played back in by freshman Sebastian Scales to a wide open Jake Kirsch. Although Kirsch got off a great shot, he had positioned himself offsides, and the play was blown dead.

Cornell drops to 6-1-2 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 2-4-3.

The Big Red will travel to Penn on Saturday Oct. 5 for the first game of its Ivy League schedule.
