Quick Succession of Colgate Goals Sinks Women's Soccer, 3-0

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The women's soccer team got off to a good start in its home opener Sunday, but it couldn't convert any of its chances. Colgate then pounced for three goals in an eight-minute span later in the first half to hand the Big Red its first loss of the season in a 3-0 tilt at sunny Berman Field.

Junior midfielder Kerry Schubert, who scored the winning goal for Cornell on Friday at Sacred Heart, had the game's first scoring opportunity when she dispossessed a Colgate defender on the right side in the eighth minute. She started to angle in from the right side of the box then struck a shot that bounded just wide of the far post.

Six minutes later, Cornell (1-1) earned a corner kick from the left side that driven into the box by senior Rachel Nichols. Junior midfielder Claire MacManus got on the end of it and snapped off a header bound for goal, but goalkeeper Erin Cummings was able to push the shot onto the crossbar and a rebound attempt caromed wide.

Shortly thereafter, Colgate (4-1) opened the scoring when Catherine Williams made a run up the left side before serving a cross into the box. Emily Manoogian got on the end of it and headed the ball back inside the far post for the winning goal in the 16th minute.

The Raiders then took control of the game with a pair of long-range strikes in a span of 1 minute, 45 seconds. Caroline Brawner provided the first goal, then set up a similiar shot from 25-30 yards by Lexi Panepinto.

Colgate's Cummings made three saves for her third shutout of the season, with MacManus directing two Cornell shots on target and sophomore Caroline Growney beind the other. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney made her collegiate debut for the Big Red in the second half, stopping the only shot sent her way.

The Big Red will wrap up a demanding stretch of three games in five days at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Buffalo.
