Box Score ITHACA, N.Y.—No. 3 Cornell extended its unbeaten streak to five games following its 6-4 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Big Red improved their record to 13-1-3 and look to resume conference play next weekend at Lynah Rink.
Jess Brown and Jill Saulnier netted two goals and one assist each to help lift the Big Red over the Lakers. The weekens series was the first between the teams since last year's heartbreaking 4-3 overtime decision at home that ended the Big Red's bid in the NCAA tournament.
Lauren Slebodnick contributed with 29 saves to capture her 62
nd career win and remained unbeaten this season with a record of 11-0-3.
Amanda Makela and Julia DiTondo combined for 30 saves and J'nai Mahadeo had three assists as the Mercyhurst Lakers dropped to 14-6-3 on the season.
Taylor Woods opened up scoring at 12:53 on a power play goal in the first period. Mercyhurst answered back in less than a minute, but the Big Red proved to be too much for the Lakers as Brown and Saulnier notched two goals to take a 3-1 lead. The Big Red never trailed after that, leading by as many as three goals. In the second period, Mercyhurst and Cornell both scored two goals to keep the game close entering the third. Christie Cicero rounded out the scoring for Mercyhurst in the final period keeping the Lakers alive, but Saulnier put the game away with a late, empty net goal with just over a minute left to play.
Cornell is back on the ice on Friday, Jan. 17 when it hosts Dartmouth at 7 p.m., and on Saturday, Jan. 18 when Ivy League rival Harvard comes to town for a 4 p.m. face-off.
