Box Score
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Junior forward
Brian Ferlin scored his team-leading 10th goal with 17.1 seconds remaining in overtime, leading the men's hockey team to an scintillating 3-2 victory over Yale on Friday night at Ingalls Rink.
Sophomore forward
John Knisley and freshman forward
Jeff Kubiak had a goal and an assist apiece for 11
th-ranked Cornell (11-4-5, 7-3-4 ECAC Hockey). It was the first collegiate goal for Kubiak, and the Big Red stretched its unbeaten streak to eight straight games (4-0-4).
Senior goaltender
Andy Iles made 38 saves for the victory, including four in overtime. It was the Big Red's second straight come-from-behind 3-2 win over a nationally ranked team, coming on the heels of a victory over Clarkson last Saturday. Yale (10-6-4, 5-5-3) entered the weekend ranked 13
th in both major polls.
Iles kept the Big Red alive in the wild overtime frame, stopping Kenny Agostino's bid from the right circle at the :45 mark. End-to-end action ensued, leading up to Ferlin's winner. Yale tried to force the puck toward goal from the right point, but the puck bounced off junior defenseman
Joakim Ryan's skate and toward the middle. Ferlin sprinted away and outlegged a Yale defenseman up ice, then picked a spot over the glove of Bulldogs goalie Alex Lyon.
Sophomore defenseman
Reece Willcox had a pair of assists for the Big Red, which finished just its second regular-season series sweep of Yale since the 2004-05 campaign. Cornell also won both games against Yale two seasons ago, with the second victory clinching the Ivy League championship. This victory leaves the Big Red 5-0-1 in Ivy play this season.
The Big Red got started on the right foot with the game's opening goal coming just 2:02 in. Knisley returned to the lineup after a one-game absence and wasted little time making an impact on his first shift. The Big Red kept possession along the right side before Kubiak dished off the Knisley going behind the net. Knisley came around to the right of Yale's Alex Lyon and slipped a shot under the goalie.
But Yale answered to tie the game less than three minutes later. After Iles made a pair of saves, defenseman Gus Young swept in to convert the second rebound at the 4:47 mark. Iles then made a point-blank save on Chris Izmirlian on the next shift, and watched Trent Ruffolo's deflection of a point shot clank off the outside of the cage to his left.
Cornell killed the first penalty of the game and started to gain some momentum in the second half of the frame. A solid forecheck from
Joel Lowry helped
John McCarron set up
Cole Bardreau for a shot from the top of the crease, but Lyon came across to make a save with 4:05 left. About 90 seconds later,
Christian Hilbrich was in similar position and faked Lyon to the ice, but his angle was running out as he ripped a forehand shot off the side netting.
Yale then jumped ahead with 49.8 seconds left in the period after a turnover in the neutral zone sent the Bulldogs away on a two-on-one. Frankie DiChiara made the pass across to Anthony Day just upon entry into the zone, giving Day time to set up his shot off the crossbar on Iles' stick side to give the Bulldogs their first lead.
Once again, Iles was called upon to make a huge save right after a Yale goal – this time stoning Kenny Agostino from the top of the crease with 39 seconds left before the intermission.
The Big Red came back to knot the score 5:24 into the second on Kubiak's goal. A long cross-ice pass from the Willcox on the right side set up Knisley in the left circle. Lyon came out to challenge and stopped Knisley's shot, but the puck dribbled under him to Kubiak at the top of the crease for the tap-in.
Cornell generated plenty of chances soon thereafter, but couldn't claim the lead. Yale was awarded its third power play in the latter moments of the frame, but the Big Red penalty kill was equal to the task and sent the teams into the third tied at 2. Cornell was 28-for-30 (93.3 percent) in December and January.
Both teams had chances to jump ahead in the third to no avail. Ryan started a Cornell rush that ended with
John McCarron setting up Bardreau in tight with 5:38 to play. Lyon slid across to make the save.
About a minute later, Yale managed to push the puck into the Cornell net, but the goal didn't count with the officials ruling the Bulldogs pushed Iles into goal along with the puck.
Cornell returns to action at 7 p.m. Saturday at Brown (9-8-3, 6-6-1 ECAC Hockey). The Bears were also in action Friday, defeating Colgate, 5-2.
