PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore quarterback
Robert Somborn hit junior receiver
Chris Lenz for a pair of touchdowns, but Brown's consecutive touchdowns late in the first half allowed the Bears to earn a 42-16 win on Saturday afternoon at Brown Stadium. Cornell dropped to 0-6 (0-3 Ivy) with the loss and Brown evened its record at 3-3 (1-2 Ivy).
Somborn, who missed the team's first five games due to injury, completed 7-of-14 passes fo 118 yards and two touchdowns, both to Lenz. The junior caught a 12-yard scoring pass midway through the fourth quarter, then hauled in a career-long 51-yard scoring strike late. Junior
Luke Hagy piled up 63 rushing yards to lead the offense, while
Jonathan Ford's 10 tackles sparked the defense. Senior captain
Rush Imhotep forced a fumble and sophomor epunter
Chris Fraser averaged an impressive 42.8 yards on nine punts, including four pinning the Bears inside their own 20.
Marcus Fuller completed 20-of-33 passes foe 306 yards and four touchdowns in the win, hitting four different receivers for scoring strikes. Zach Sparber had five tackles, including three for a loss, for a Brown defense that surrendered just 242 total yards.
The offense started its first drive with a burst against a tough Brown defense, but four penalties killed the drive. Both teams had touchdowns wiped out, a defensive score off an interception that was overturned after a roughing the passer and an offensive touchdown knocked off the board by an ineligible man downfield.
Brown went 89 yards on four plays to get on the board, with a 35-yard pass play from Fuller to Alex Jette setting up Andrew Coke for a 2-yard dive to make it 7-0 midway through the first.
Trailing by a touchdown early in the second quarter, a Big Red drive stalled out at the Brown and Fraser perfectly placed a 36-yard punt that
Luke Hagy downed inside the 1. On the Bears' first play from scrimmage, Fuller stepped out of the back of the end zone for a safety after the line was able to put some pressure on the quarterback. That put the visitors on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 7-2.
While the Big Red couldn't get it going on the offensive end, Brown was able to take advantage for a pair of scoring drives. The Bears made it 14-2 with less than four minutes remaining when Fuller hit Jette for a 23-yard score to end a nine-play, 92-yard drive. After Cornell was forced to punt it away again, Brown went into the break with all the momentum as Brian Strachan was able to make an outstanding catch in the right corner of the end zone against excellent coverage with 25 seconds left in the half.
The Big Red was just 1-of-8 on third downs, but still controlled possession throughout by holding the ball for 17:37. Fraser continued to be a dominant weapon on special teams, averaging 41.1 yards on seven punts with four being pinned inside the 20 and two going for more than 50 yards. The Bears outgained Cornell by a 234-97 margin in the first 30 minutes.
Brown scored four minutes into the third quarter and again four minutes into the fourth to extend its lead to 35-2 before it was able to get the offense going. Troy Doles hauled in a 29-yard pass from Fuller and Reiley Higgins scored from 11 yards out.
Cornell went on its best drive of the day, a nine-play, 81-yard romp, that ended with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Somborn to Lenz with 7:09 left. A pair of nice runs by
Luke Hagy and
Josh Sweet over got the Big Red into the red zone, and Somborn's touchdown pass came on a daring fourth-and-1.
Just eight seconds later, brown stole the momentum back. The Big Red went for an on-sides kick that bounced directly into the arms of Higgins, who scored an earlier touchdown. Higgins fielded the ball cleanly and ran for paydirt, scoring from 44 yards out.
Undaunted, Cornell went back to work. Somborn hit
Lucas Shapiro for a 20-yard gainer on third-and-13 to keep the drive alive, and the Bears aided with a roughing the kicker penalty on a Big Red punt. On the very next play, Somborn went up top to Lenz, who went 51 yards into the end zone.
John Wells added the Pat to make it 42-16.
Cornell's young defense forced a three-and-out, with freshman defensive linemen Al Sandoval and
Gus Basanes combining to stuff the Bears on a fourth-and-1 from midfield.
The Big Red defense forced its first turnover of the day early in the third with the visitors trailing 28-2. Fuller completed a quick pass to Doles in the flat, but
Rush Imhotep knocked the ball out and
Justin Solomon recovered at the Brown 22. Cornell wasn't able to cash in on the miscue, however, and turned the ball over on downs.
Cornell returns home for a nationally televised game with defending Ivy League champion Princeton on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 12:30 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field. The contest will be televised live on Fox College Sports Network.
