Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Falls Short 2-0 at Minnesota-Duluth

Box Score (PDF)

DULUTH, Minn. – A pair of second period goals powered No. 9/10 Minnesota-Duluth to its second victory in as many nights against Cornell women's hockey at AMSOIL Arena. Ashleigh Brykaliuk and Zoe Hickel tallied goals 4:45 apart in a decisive second period for the Bulldogs in the 2-0 victory over the Big Red.

Sophomore goaltender Paula Voorheis (L, 3-6-0) posted a strong game despite dropping her second consecutive decision. She stopped 30-of-32 shots – including an outstanding 16 – as the Bulldogs brought the heat in the middle period.

Contrary to yesterday's wide-open affair, Saturday night's game was played much tighter on the defensive end. Cornell (3-6-0, 3-2-0 ECAC Hockey) drastically improved its possession and faceoff numbers, but could not find a way to solve Minnesota-Duluth (10-4-2, 5-4-1 WCHA) net-minder Kayla Black (W, 9-4-2), who stopped 22 Cornell stops to post her fifth shutout of the season.

The Big Red came out strong, undeterred by yesterday's difficult concluding period. Cornell outshot the Bulldogs seven-to-five in the opening 20 minutes, while it carried 1:31 of power-play time over to the fresh ice in the second period.

Unfortunately, the player advantage turned into a goal for the Bulldogs at 1:04 of the second period. Brykaliuk moved in short-handed and ripped a shot past Voorheis with Jenna McParland and Sidney Morin notching the assists.

Cornell's penalty woes continued just three minutes later when juniors Jess Brown (checking) and Cassandra Poudrier (high-sticking) took consecutive penalties – two of 10 penalties taken in the game - giving the Bulldogs a brief five-on-three and a prolonged five-on-four advantage. Zoe Hickel blasted a shot past Voorheis for her third goal of the weekend with assists going to Lara Stalder and Meghan Huertas.

The Big Red put together a strong third period, firing nine shots on Black. The Bulldogs goaltender stood tall to deny all nine.

Cornell will return to action after the Thanksgiving break when the team welcomes non-conference rival Mercyhurst to Lynah Rink for a 7 p.m. puck drop on Monday, December 1.
