Women's Soccer Closes 2014 With Win Over Dartmouth

ITHACA, N.Y. — Sophomore Brenna Mockler scored late in the first half, and the women's soccer team won its eighth game overall and second in the Ivy League for the first time since 2002 with a 1-0 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field.

Mockler scored the lone goal of the contest with 1:28 remaining in the first half on a shot from 20 yards slightly left of center. Freshman Tess Pullano started the scoring play, gathering a loose ball at the far left side of the box. She fed the ball back to Mockler just outside the box. The junior sent an arcing shot that dipped just inside the far right corner of the net for her first goal of the season. Pullano earned the assist on the tally, the second helper of her debut season. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney made three saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

Offense was certainly a premium on a frigid and blustery final day of the season. Neither team was able to generate much in the way of quality chances throughout much of the first half, as both teams seemed to feel each other out in the opening minutes. The Big Green actually kept Cornell bottled up in its own end through much of the opening 20 minutes, before the Big Red began to warm to the task. Cornell generated several looks at net, finally breaking through right before half on Mockler's tally. The Big Red outshot Dartmouth 6-3 in the opening 45-minutes.

Dartmouth pushed hard for the equalizer in the second half. The team fired 10 shots in the second 45, but the Big Red insulated the net, allowing only two shots find their way to net. Tierney was there to make the saves when called upon.

Cornell nearly doubled its leads in the 80th minute. Elizabeth Crowell whipped in a low cross after the Big Red earned a corner kick opportunity. The ball fell to Shanay Fischer who laced a low shot to the right post that was blocked. Kelly Abrams gathered the rebound with an excellent look at net, but was not able to get enough on the shot to beat Dartmouth keeper Tatiana Saunders.

With the win, Cornell (8-9, 2-5 Ivy) will finish seventh in the Ivy League, one point ahead of Brown. This marks the first season the Big Red finished higher than eighth place in the conference since 2004, and it also marks the first time the program has defeated the Big Green since Nov. 11, 1995. Dartmouth (7-5-4, 3-1-3) was in contention for the Ivy League title entering the day.

Cornell celebrated Senior Day before the game, as the team honored seniors Kerry Schubert, Kelly Abrams, Sydney Cetrullo, and Claire MacManus.
